Every spring, CRS hosts an orientation for our incoming Kindergarten students and their families. Here's an excerpt from our PTA Welcome:
Hi! My name is Rachel Lohman, and I am the incoming president of the PTA here at Colonial Road School. I first want to say welcome! As the mom of a 2nd and 3rd grader, I remember this day well, and the excitement and butterflies I felt bringing my kids into this building for the first time. It was “big kid school.” And it felt like a big step as a parent. I know how you’re feeling, as do many of your fellow parents who have older children here. In fact, two members of our incoming board, Jane Santos and Chela Papaccioli, are here today with their boys. You haven’t even started yet, and your grade already has 1/3 representation on our board!
For our new CRS friends, I say, let your butterflies go…you have a great support system here, even in this room, and you’re at the start of something really great. My daughter wants me to tell you, “You’re gonna love CRS. Mrs. Douma and Mrs. Raphael are really, really, really, really nice...and Mrs. Gagliardo and the teachers dress up in funny stuff for Halloween.” My son, the 3rd grader, says “CRS is amazing. You’re going to make so many great friends and memories here.” I couldn’t agree with them more.
You’re going to get a lot of information today, and I don’t want to overwhelm you. But what I want you to walk out of here with is an intention…to join our PTA and GET INVOLVED. Join committees, come to our meetings and events. If you do, I promise that you and your family will quickly find that CRS isn’t just a school…it’s a community and a home for our families.
So, what does our PTA do? Our PTA’s primary mission is to enhance our children’s educational and social experience. We do this by planning and funding the majority of assembly programs at CRS, along with a full-day “Education Day” event at school, books for the library and requested supplies for classrooms. We also have lots of fun together! We hold a Movie Night, Bingo Night, Ice Skating and Snow Tubing, a huge Trunk or Treat and Halloween Bash here at school and a big party in our backyard at the end of the school year. This year, our parent volunteers gave their time and our PTA contributed more than $30,000 to make all this and more possible.
Our PTA is 205 members strong, and is made up of our families, teachers and administrators. There is a way for everyone to be a part of the PTA, whether you work outside the home or as a stay-at-home-parent. We hope that you will consider joining when you receive the membership form in your Back to School Packet in August. We are so excited to welcome you to our CRS family!
If you have any questions, I’ll stick around afterwards. I also welcome you to call me anytime if I can be helpful in any way. On behalf of our PTA members, we look forward to meeting you all and having an amazing school year together! Thank you!
